Our Masjid

Our History

Alhamdulillah, the Darlaston community takes pride in its rich Islamic history in Darlaston and Wednesbury. Take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices and struggles our predecessors endured, paving the way for us to become the organisation we are today.

The Muslim community in Darlaston began in 1955 with the arrival of the first Muslims, who lived in small groups in individual homes. As the population increase, the need arose for a Masjid and Madrasah to allow the community to worship and preserve the Deen.

In 1959, the Muslim Welfare Society was established to organize the community and address growing needs, such as the establishment of a Masjid and Madrasah for religious education.

In 1967, the first Masjid and Madrassa were set up at 59 Walsall Road, offering daily prayers, Islamic education, and a place for Nikah ceremonies. Many children who attended the Madrassa went on to memorize the Quran and become religious leaders.

As the Muslim population grew, the need for a larger, purpose-built Masjid became clear. In 1986, after significant fundraising, including a generous donation of one million pounds from a Saudi benefactor, Masjid-e-Umar was completed. It became one of the first purpose-built mosques in the UK, providing a central space for worship, education, and community activities, marking a new era for Muslims in Darlaston.
